Even animal rights activists from Muggia took to the streets to support the cause of “Farm of the Last”, the incredible story of animals released in a shelter, who risk being killed by the bureaucracy.
In the animal shelter, located at the gates of Rome, there are many animals freed from situations of degradation and human domination. Among them are well 140 pigs including pigs rescued from illegal farms and wild boars urbanized and recovered before they were slaughtered by the institutions or invested and cared for in the structure.

The ordeal of the refuge began last August 8 when a provision by the Health Authority ordered the slaughter of all 140 pigs present in the shelter, as a measure to prevent the spread of swine fever. The paradox is that an ASF outbreak is not active in the shelter (Over the Pig).
In the Insugherata nature reserve at approx 15 km from “Farm of the Last” four cases of wild boars who died as a result of PSE infection were identified (Over the Pig). The Extraordinary Commissioner for the emergency, Angelo Ferrari, has therefore identified a so-called area “Rossa” where to strengthen biosecurity measures. The story follows the events that occurred during the Covid-19 pandemic, where the most widespread areas have been subject to strong measures against the population, but certainly not so drastic as to predict that someone would be killed.
“The animals in the shelter are supervised and healthy” they let the shelter know, “There's no reason to put them down they're here because we gave them a second chance”. The volunteers were working to file an expert report on compliance with biosecurity standards with the Administrative Court, when the TAR shortened the timing initially provided.
The animal welfare organizations have lined up united, both legally and politically. Lav has made its team of lawyers available, and associations such as Enpa, Leal, Leida, Lndc, The bad ones, and Tda have signed a note asking to give the refuge time to present all the defensive documentation.
Even a group of animal rights activists from Trieste found the 18 August in Piazza della Borsa in Trieste to demonstrate dissent to this provision which, according to them, it represents the blind application of speciesist norms. The choral request is that the institutions intervene to re-evaluate all the measures to control the spread of PSE for pigs, not only for the Sfattoria and for all those who live in the red areas of Italy. “The killing of animals, it cannot be contemplated as a measure to reduce contagion” Cristian Bacci reiterates, president of MujaVeg “ASF is not a zoonosis, this means that it cannot infect humans, it is therefore absurd that for “to save” pigs from a virus that could lead to the natural death of some of them is decided for a mass killing”
